Lazy 3-day weekend poll ~ Haiku challenge 2026!

Posted by Robin on 16 May 2026 178 Comments

This weekend, our seventeenth annual Haiku Challenge (if you like, you can check out past years for inspiration). We're also happy to include other forms of poetry if haiku don't inspire you. Have a perfume-related limerick or a sonnet you'd like to share? Please do.

If you're writing a haiku, pick a perfume or a perfume house (or really, anything related to perfume), and write a haiku about it.

Use the simplified English form — your haiku should have three lines, the first line with five syllables, the second line with seven syllables and the third line with five syllables. You can put the perfume name in the title if that makes it easier, and at any rate, don’t stress over the rules of traditional haiku — this is just for fun.

Or, as always, just talk about something else.

Note: top image is Japanese netsuke of Kikujido inside Chyrsanthemum leaves, via The Fitzwilliam Museum, University of Cambridge Museums, some rights reserved. (And you can read more about traditional Japanese inro and netsuke at Wikipedia.)

Such a gorgeous image today, Robin. Netsuke are so delicate and beautiful. I had to look up kikujido. I don’t see the chrysanthemum boy but perhaps he’s on the other side or I need to get my eyes checked.
Following up on this week’s painting, I wore Grey Vetiver by Tom Ford, which despite its name I consider green for the wife’s robe due to vetiver being a green plant, even though I realize that the root is the part usually used in perfumery. Husband has GV and likes it ok but I find it a bit meh. This morning pre-run, I’m continuing the painting theme by wearing an unknown Annick Goutal scent in the ribbed glass bottle on which the label attached on the gold ribbon has smudged and is now unreadable. (I got it for a song so it doesn’t matter. Insert gripe: I have seen many Goutal bottles over the years where the label has fallen off the ribbon, leaving it hard to identify. Those labels looked very pretty but were too easy to tear, lose, fall off over the years. ) It has a very light floral citrusy vibe, but not deep white florals like Passion, Gardenia Passion, & Songes. It’s possible that the scent has also become degraded over time so I can’t get a proper read on it. But it has not turned, so it is a pleasant-smelling mystery. I am connecting this enigmatic bottle to the myriad mysteries surrounding the iconography of the painting. Much remains unknown about each of them.
Tomorrow I might wear Bois d’Argent by Dior from my dwindling decant. Bois for the sumptuous hardwood depicted in the painting and argent for silver, which is used in mirrors, the mirror being a focal as well as reflective point of the painting.
Thank you Gaynor for recommending Alastair Reynolds. I’ve now ordered several more of his books.

Go to the link and scroll down a bit…there are lots of images, including several with the piece (I don’t really understand if it is a proper netsuke or an inro) open, and then you see kikujido hiding inside.

Is there no tiny label on the underside of the Goutal bottle? Could it be Eau de Camille? (honeysuckle, syringa/lilac, privet & ivy)

Robin – Thx so much for the explanation of how to see more photos. The netsuke is breathtaking, how it opens up to reveal the boy and how seamless it looks from the outside. When I think of how small it must be, it becomes even more stunning.
As to the mystery Goutal, there is indeed a label at the bottom which tells everything *except* the name of the fragrance, darn it. Thanks for the suggestion about Eau de Camille, the notes sound like they might fit, but I don’t remember exactly what Camille smelled like. Honestly some of those Goutals blend together in my brain unless there are notes that stick out because I’m bad at picking out mild floral notes. But that’s what I’m wearing again this morning to try to tickle the brain cells. It will fade in a few hours at most and then I’ll be on to something else!
I hope everyone is having a good weekend.
Gaynor, my son texted me last night, very enthused about The Prefect, which he’s about 70 pages into. He really likes the worldbuilding too. So you deserve extra thanks from him.

I love the Goutal fragrances so much, so it’s thrilling to me when someone wear one and posts about it:) Camille is so green it’s impossible to mistake, IMHO. Eau de Ciel is violets and rainwater, Eau de Charlotte is mimosa and cassis. Gardenia Passion is gardenia and jasmine. I second the paper labels falling off. You smell great, whichever fragrance it is:)

Here we go again! And a beuatiful netsuke image – the chrysantemum petals are crafted exquisitely. I wrote five haiku for the challenge. I will also share one haiku I wrote earlier, which is unrelated to perfume.

Absolutely no talent for haiku construction here, so I’m just going to enjoy everyone else’s efforts. Am back in SMN Eva today, because (a) I love it, (b) got my first unsolicited compliment in a very long time the other day while wearing it (granted it was from an attorney and may have been part of her first-meeting schtick, but still), and (c) after noticing that it’s becoming harder to find, I ordered a backup bottle. The picture on the website has a label that’s a bit different than on my current bottle; hopefully the juice is unchanged. Hey, happy Saturday everyone!

No haiku this morning, I am poetry challenged, but a book recommendation. Yesterday I finished “The Beheading Game” by Rebecca Lehmann. The premise is so imaginative: Anne Boleyn, after her execution, awakes in a box. She picks up her head, leaves the box, steals clothes and a sewing kit, sews her head back on, and sets out to kill Henry VIII. What follows is part history lesson, part fantastical fable. The writing is excellent, and it’s one of the most creative stories I’ve read in a long time. I can never scent characters very well, but today I would put Anne in Mohur, for the Tudor rose, and for the connection with money, because Anne doesn’t have any after her death and has to get some. I’ll wear Mohur, too.

I am haiku-less today but will still share a poem from one of my favorite authors and poets, Jim Harrison. It has some resemblance to haiku in its spare construction, with every word being a necessary support to the entire structure is the poem. I’m pairing it with Corsica Furiosa, because Harrison lived his life in a wild and passionate manner, often without regard to his own well being.

    Barking

    The moon comes up.
    The moon goes down.
    This is to inform you
    that I didn’t die young.
    Age swept past me
    but I caught up.
Spring has begun here and each day
brings new birds up from Mexico.
Yesterday I got a call from the outside
world but I said no in thunder.
I was a dog on a short chain
    and now there’s no chain.

I took it as “the call from outside” meant the outside world was pulling him back. “Dog on a short chain” was all the responsibilities and obligations of the world, but “now there’s no chain” equals freedom from the responsibilities and obligations.

Well, I picked a fun day to pop back to NST! Love the haikus (Glannys, you’re on a roll!)

I’m here mainly to ask a non-perfume-related question but one about which I hope SOMEONE here will have info. It seems like that kind of crowd. As some of you may remember, my aunt died last year, and I am just beginning to sort through some of the things we brought back when we cleared her house.

One of these things is a lovely folding handheld fan with feathers at the end of each stick of the frame. Except: I hadn’t fully unwrapped it until a few days back. Now I have. Caveat: this must be a Victorian or Edwardian piece. First issue, the sticks may be ivory (if not, I suspect they are bone). Given the age, there should not be legal issues, but it’s unfortunate. Second issue: in addition to the feathers, the outermost stick features a small taxidermied bird. This was…a shock. I’ve found very little information on such things except that they were popular “in Europe and Brazil in the late 19th century.”

Given how much my aunt loved LIVING birds and how this fan is very much NOT her style, I imagine it belonged to some family member in my grandparents’ or great-grandparents’ generation. What on earth do I do with it? I would not be comfortable using it, but it is beautiful and I would be happy for someone else to enjoy it. I’m thinking I might sell it and donate the proceeds to a wildlife charity or use them to buy birdseed this winter. If anyone here has expertise on vintage fans or on this particular fan-with-taxidermy niche, please let me know!

Not a taxidermy expert by any means, but it may behoove you to have it evaluated and appraised. If it has value, you could sell it and donate the money to a bird sanctuary, thereby closing a circle that began with the idea that animals are for entertainment and decorative use. Just a thought. 🙂

Replying to myself to thank all of you for these VERY helpful suggestions. Through the Fan Association of North America I have learned that it is a brisé fan. Auction-house records suggest that there is more value in Chinese fans or in much older European ones, but I have more research to do. I will report back to the group when I have learned more!

Today was my first day back horseback riding. The moment I saw the horse I ride, I cried.
All morning my SOTD was the scent of sweat and horse — a very expensive perfume!
Now, after a shower, SOTD Ralph Lauren Safari. Why they ever discontinued it, I’ll never understand.
It was a beautiful day today, and tonight we’ll be cheering for the Montreal Canadiens. Here’s hoping the goalie keeps his head on straight and stays focused..the last game he did not play well during the 1st period.

My haiku is dreadfully literal. 😁 Trying Kuumba Made Amber Paste today and it’s giving me Cinnabar vibes in the opening so far. It’s truly a paste too…comes in a small vial w/ a dipstick applicator like nail polish but no brush on the end. 😉

I like it when haiku has a kind of “turn” in it (away from the sober, I guess), so I enjoyed the “Nope” of line 2.

      Love that.

I bought a lot of that Kuumba Made and other little vials from the natural food store when I first got into perfume in the early 2000’s and a lot of them weren’t bad, just a bit simplistic. I wore Egyptian musk a lot. I even have a vial of the one Carolyn Bessette Kennedy used to wear.

Thanks! They have been around forever but I never really dabbled in them. I got Vanilla Bean too but haven’t tried it yet.

It looks like she wore Abdul Kareem’s Egyptian Musk Oil…is that the one you have please? Curious how it is. I really enjoyed the Amber Paste as the day wore on. It reminded me of Cinnabar in the opening and Amber Sultan in the dry down…it was a very enjoyable non-linear and morphed through different stages as it bloomed…thumbs up from me.

Yes. I have that one. I think I did buy into the Carolyn Bessette Kennedy hype – 10+ years ago so BEFORE the current level of hype- that this version of Egyptian musk was the best. Honestly, I did not find it much different from other Egyptian musks I have owned – I think I tried a lot of them. I did have a real cheapie roll on-oil that I also got online that was my favorite but I think it is long used up by now.

I wore Egyptian musk so much in the early 2000’s that I think it is difficult for me to go back. The only fragrance from that era I still wear is SJP Lovely.

I heard that the CBK favorite was selling for a lot since it is discontinued. What I never understand about discontinued and pricey fragrances is why someone does not reissue them.

There is a large high over the country ( weather, not mood) and so the sky has been clear blue, with not even a breath of wind. I went down to the river where it flows into the harbour and watched the grey heron fish. It was in the swampy weeds on a side stream and was catching sprats. It was so beautiful. The duck with 8 ducklings a few weeks back now has five ducklings, but all of a good size so it’s looking good for them. I bought fresh Bluff oysters for dinner last night ( a once a year treat as they are $48/ dozen). These come from the bottom of the country and today the house smells of sea water. I’m wearing CDG Sunscreen as I quite like its relaxed vibes. Think I will go to the beach later, for a walk

That all sounds so lovely, except that I don’t like oysters. It’s always sad that some young birds don’t make it, but I’m glad the five remaining ducklings are looking good.

In other news, I am hankering for a “Royal Pop”, a Swatch x Audemars Piguet at $400 (excluding tax and shipping) BUT I have to go to the Times Square store to get it 😡.

I still love Swatches! I usually wear mine everyday (one at a much more reasonable price point) but I need a new battery. Have loved them since forever and such a fun change from the ubiquitous Apple Watches these days that overload you with information, including your stress level, so you can now be additionally stressed knowing you’re stressed! 🙃

LOL! I am pretty sure I have one of the original pop swatches and I may actually know where it is. Also, did you know you can get free batteries installed lifetime? Not sure if you can mail it in but at worst, if you happen to pass by a store, you can stop in. Re: Apple Watch – I wear mine constantly but use very few of the features …

I read about that in the Guardian today, and was like, what, people fighting for a Swatch, is this the ’80s? And then went back to the beginning of the article where they mentioned the collab. But still.

I’m jaded on fancy watches. My spouse bought me one, a few years ago (fancy watches are his thing), and that thing has NEVER been able to keep time. I get everything you have to do with an automatic watch. I wore it every day. I wound it. I did everything. And it was always fast or slow, mostly fast. He tells me it was always magnetized, but IDK, I have to use cell phones and computers every day, and he does too, and his watches don’t magnetize? That watch was in the shop more than I wore it, and no one ever fixed it…total lemon. In the end, I went back to the “cheap” battery-powered Raymond Weil watch I had before and loved before I lost it at a pumpkin farm.

Rain this morning, then very warm with temps in the mid-80’s and humid. A busy day with the garden club plant sale this morning, then volunteer time at the library, then a WWI and WWII military encampment at our historical society. Finally home and going to relax with the ballgame.

Staying green and vintage with my fragrance today. Just a tiny spritz of the classic Yardley LOTV for my early activities, now enjoying YR Desir de Nature with a touch of mint and mandarin orange over LOTV ending in soft oakmoss and juniper.

    Have a wonderful evening!⚾️

    Grandma’s best perfume
Now a new version for me
    The classic lives on
    (Chanel No.5 Eau Premiere)

So often, I think back to my grandmother’s perfume shelf. Youth Dew, Chanel and L’Air du Temp. I have her last Chanel No.5 but I cannot wear it, I prefer the modern version of Eau Premiere. I have a Youth Dew that I use only to open and remind me of her.

Doing my usual weekend thing, housework, cooking and some much-needed lounging. I am testing out a Lust in Paradise sample. I do my sample testing often on weekend. I am thinking about Lust in Paradise versus Fleur Narcotique as my next purchase. So far, I think the Fleur Narcotique is ahead.

It’s rainy and chilly today but I’m enjoying the nice change. Yesterday was perfect- 75F and a cool breeze that was conducive to some laid back walkabouts for doggo and myself.

Today, I’m flying under the radar again with Bvlgari Omnia, which is always a lovely treat.

This article in The Guardian cracked me up and it’s getting a lot of “feedback.” The author approached the fact that single women are now outnumbering single men in regards to purchasing a home by focusing on how this makes men “feel” less like a man. No, “Kudos to you for being able to purchase a home in this economic climate!” No, “Well done, you!” No, “Enjoy your decorative freedom!” Nope. It’s all in relation men’s feelings. No need to remind me to never give The Guardian a single dime. 😂 I can never thank my father enough for his strong belief in the power of women, especially coming from his very poor, very conservative, very gender role defined background. Love you, Dad!

    For those interested in laugh:

Omnia is so beautiful. I had a gift set with body wash and other nice things. My father loved it so much I gave it to him. Smelled extraordinary on him. Have a good weekend!

Yeah, I think I’ll stay away from that. Generally I find the Guardian pretty female forward. These days it’s the NYT falling all over themselves to show us how women can’t do anything, because they somehow think they need to be conservative. (Hint: The right wing will NEVER read them.)

    Green! Green! is my world
    Flowers brighten trees, shrubs, grass
    I am connected

(reflects both my love for green scents in Spring as well as harmonizing my SOTD to what’s going on outside my window as the seasons evolve)

SOTD is more floral than green, love2love Jasmine & Sparkling Mimosa, but mimosa is said to have a green nuance and the bottle is green – and it’s very warm and humid again so I needed a light refreshing scent, which this is, and I definitely can smell a green note.

Had a wonderful delayed Mother’s Day breakfast out with DS and family (DIL was out of town all week helping her parents relocate and picking up granddaughter from college). Wonderful to catch up with both grandtwins after their first year of college; both doing well, Grandma is very proud!👏👏

I have always loved Japan and it’s culture, since a little baby really. Therefore – also love the image, Robin!!
As for SOTD it is Coromandel.

Running on very little sleep this morning, and came up with a couple of silly haikus

    Soft fluffy donuts
    Calling my name this morning
    Best served with coffee

    For last Mother’s Day
    I was gifted three orchids
May my un-green thumb not kill

Have a lovely Monday! SOTD to be decided after I’m fully alert.

Your first haiku sounded quite tasty! I almost wanted to do a Krispy Kreme run after reading it. 🤣

    A scent from my youth
    And now into seniorhood
    Miss Dior my Love!

Staying with green and LOTV, my SOTD is Miss Dior edt, a vintage splash version in an unusual bottle, round tubular and fluted with what I recall once seeing described as ‘saddlebags’ on either side where arms would be. But I’m unable to find any info on this particular bottle/version at this time. All I know is that I’ve had it for a long time and it smells just like the houndstooth bottle I wore in my youth. I’ve seen many different notes for all the different versions of this floral green chypre – I love its green, grassy, mossy, patchouli aspects and I know there’s LOTV in there somewhere. My neighbor’s LOTV is finally beginning to bloom, and now that it’s warm enough to open the windows, I’m hoping its lovely white blossoms will scent my home soon.🤞

Dark and gloomy, warm and very humid today with intermittent storms, a yuk start to the week. I’m hoping to get to a nearby nursery in between storms to pick up a couple of plants I need to finish the herb garden.

Wishing all a fragrant week ahead!🍃🌱

      Small white bells hiding
Under broad green leaves, the shade
      Filled with a heady scent.

Two more haiku for a chilly, wet Monday afternoon. It’s snowing up in the mountains, and there is a Frost Advisory for late tonight into tomorrow morning.

    The sun is hidden
    Grey clouds cover the horizon;
    Rain streaks the windows.

    With a gentle purr
    Teflon kitty snuggles in
    My right armpit, dozing.

SOTD = back in TF Oud Wood.

I love the Teflon kitty snuggling visual. This is exactly what 😸does with Mr. Laila when we have coffee in bed in the morning. But she never does it with me. 😤

When I had 3 cats, they would all sleep on me at night. Sometimes that made for a difficult trip to the bathroom, because I had to excavate myself from them.

Chiming in with my sotd. I’m wearing SL A la Nuit.
It’s stormy today and tomorrow. My air conditioner is on because of the humidity.
