Amouage<\/a> creative director Christopher Chong aimed for something truly <\/em>great with his two latest fragrances \u2014 Memoir Man and Memoir Woman: \u201cto unlock the unfathomable mysteries that reside within human nature.\u201d <\/em>Well! It\u2019s certainly not the usual perfume goal of \u201cwe aim to move 2 million units during the first twelve months of our launch.\u201d In the Amouage \u201cMemoir\u201d PR brew, there\u2019s mention of Baudelaire<\/a>, Les Fleurs du mal<\/a>, a \u201cBlack Swan\u201d (Memoir Woman), and absinth<\/em> (perhaps quaffed as much as used as an ingredient during the Memoir creative process?)<\/p>\n Memoir Man, described as a leather-woody-foug\u00e8re fragrance, contains notes of wormwood\/absinth, basil, mint, frankincense, rose, lavender, vetiver, sandalwood, guaiac wood, amber, vanilla, musk, oakmoss, leather and tobacco; it was developed by perfumer Karine Vinchon<\/a> who I \u201cmet\u201d a few weeks ago as I sampled her L’Artisan Coeur de V\u00e9tiver Sacr\u00e9 <\/a>.<\/p>\n Memoir Man begins with a slightly musty, yet creamy, wormwood scent mixed with \u2018cool\u2019 mint. As the herbal opening develops, I also detect some sheer leather and a hint of lavender mixed with rose (always a pleasant combination to me). Then, Memoir Man begins to \u201csolidify\u201d and morph into wood. First, there\u2019s milky sandalwood, then balmy guaiac. A wonderful vanilla-tobacco-musk accord combines with the wood notes in Memoir Man\u2019s base to produce a beautiful, but quickly disappearing, aroma I can only describe as deep, dark and vivid. Within a half-hour of application, Memoir Man settles down to a long-lasting<\/em>, frankincense-rich, slightly smoky, dry (ashy)\u00a0wood accord, and I believe your opinion of this accord will determine your opinion of Memoir Man.<\/p>\n To me, Memoir Man does not match its Amouage \u201cstoryline\u201d \u2014 I get no sense of the \u201cunderworld,\u201d \u201csorrow,\u201d<\/em> \u201cdamnation\u201d <\/em>or \u201canguish\u201d<\/em>\u2026unless one imagines getting unduly upset about the fire going out in the grate (that persistent, haunting, smoky wood accord). I do detect some \u201cpoetry\u201d in Memoir Man; not the \u201cdecadent\u201d poetry of Baudelaire, but the poetry of something simpler, solid, and touchable. During Memoir Man\u2019s early development on my skin, I\u2019m reminded of two things: walking in the aromatic forests of the Pacific Northwest, and watching, years ago, a Haida<\/a> artist carve a totem pole from a huge, fragrant cedar log\u2026not bad experiences for a perfume to conjure.<\/p>\n Amouage Memoir Man is available in 50 and 100 ml Eau de Parfum ($225-260).
