Freshen up

Posted by Robin on 16 May 2026 2 Comments

A new plan to freshen up the decrepit NJ Transit system has designated lavender as the official scent of the agency’s cleaning products, CEO Kris Kolluri revealed Tuesday.

But long-suffering NJ Transit riders such as Ronald D., 40, argued the agency needs better service, not new scents.

Sweet chocolate aroma

Posted by Robin on 18 March 2026 6 Comments

Every few seconds, for the past week, spritzes of sweet chocolate aroma are pumped into one of the pedestrian tunnels in the station, part of a two-week marketing campaign for Magnum Ice Cream. A crackling noise, meant to emulate the sound of biting into a coated ice cream bar, plays on repeat.

“I hate it,” said Melvyn Yap, a scientist who commutes through the station twice a day and noticed the smell as soon as the campaign launched on March 9.

[One commuter] said: "I work in advertising and marketing, and I really admire the idea but I'm not sure they accounted for some of the other odours that might be in this enclosed tunnel. "The combination of the smell of urine and the chocolate isn't doing it for me."

A real olfactory journey

Evoking a feeling of space, calm and light, AF001 accompanies travellers in style. Its comforting musky scent, combined with mimosa from the south of France, adds a sunny, natural vibrancy. Created with hints of jasmine and rose, its delicate floral aura takes travellers on a real olfactory journey, capturing a specific moment in time.

A corporate scent might seem gimmicky, but the concept is already well established in upscale hotels and resorts. Central to its success is “embodied cognition,” a belief that bodily sensations can influence decisions and emotions without conscious awareness.

Mimosa, iris, orange blossom and cedar

A mix of mimosa, iris, orange blossom and cedar: That is what Statera's employees and visitors are supposed to smell when they enter the offices of the French consulting firm.

Based in Neuilly-sur-Seine, near Paris, the company has been diffusing fragrances in its entrance hall, open office spaces and dining area since 2023. “When you enter an environment that smells good, it unconsciously contributes to the fact that you feel good there,” says Ian Bradac, Statera’s founder.

Daydreaming figures smelling flowers or burning incense

Posted by Robin on 8 October 2024 Leave a Comment

Fragrance is visually suggested in images of daydreaming figures smelling flowers or burning incense, enhancing the sensory aura of ‘art for art’s sake’. Scent was also implied in Victorian painting to evoke hedonism – pleasure in exquisite sensations – and a preoccupation with beauty; or to reflect the Victorian vogue for synaesthesia (evoking one sense through another) and the penchant for art, like scent, to evoke moods and emotions. [...] Visitors to the exhibition will be able to participate in an optional scent experience that will enliven the scents suggested in certain paintings.

— Scent and the Art of the Pre-Raphaelites opens Friday at The Barber Institute of Fine Arts in Birmingham, England.
