Friday scent of the day 4/17

Posted by Robin on 17 April 2026 154 Comments

It's Friday plus International Bat Appreciation Day. Our community project for today: wear a fragrance by Hermès, OR something from perfumer Jean-Claude Ellena OR Christine Nagel (this is a repeat from 2014).

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

We are a little cooler here today, but I'm wearing a high summer fragrance anyway: Hermès Brin de Réglisse.

Reminder: on 4/24, celebrate Jean Paul Gaultier's birthday by wearing one of his fragrances. If you don't have one, wear anything that you think works with the JPG aesthetic, or maybe a fragrance that you'd put in a torso-shaped bottle? Or, as usual, be as creative and/or farfetched as you like with the theme.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2026, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image shows detail from the Spring 2026 ad campaign.

    Hello and tgif!
Sotd is Galop d’Hermès. One of my favourites from Hermès, both scent and bottle. I just wished I bought mine sooner when they still had the loop strap. Mine doesn’t have it. Boo.
I don’t know who I let talk me into it or maybe because I love ancient Egypt too much, today I am going to watch the new horror film Lee Cronin’s The Mummy. Glad I washed my hair already because we all know closing your eyes with your head down the shower is the *perfect* way to freak yourself out after a scary film!

I wore that earlier this week and wondered why I don’t wear it more often. I love the bottle, too, and was lucky to get the strap in the colour I wanted (blue). It lasts on me and still makes me happy after wearing it for ten years. I don’t see the refill advertised anymore.

Even the perfume itself is a rare find these days. Always makes me worry Hermes will discontinue this beauty. I got a bub just in case.
If I could, I’d want an orange or red strap.

Wearing a summer favorite, Un Jardin Sur le Nil.
I haven’t shared about my 98 (and three quarters!) mom for a while. She was in hospice care for a heart condition and Medicare says that’s not enough, so hospice unenrolled her. Hospice has helped so much, it just kills me to lose that support.
So here we are, she’s doing fine, so that’s good. I’m just tired of taking care of her which- I would have to be super woman not to feel burned out. But I’m really fine, too.

Ringthing, I looked after my mom for decades. I’m glad your mom has made it to an advanced age-I bet the care you’ve given has contributed to that. It’s hard to take care of yourself, to, while looking after other people. I have sympathy for what you’re describing. You do smell fantastic-Nil is a scent I’ve repurchased over the years. Take care.

      Scent twins!

My grandma and aunt just started talking to hospice a week or so ago, and it sounds like it went well. But I’m not sure how often they’re going to be coming. Any help will be good for my aunt, who’s not even legally my aunt any longer, but bless her for helping out since the grandkids are so far flung these days. And I know your mom must really appreciate your help, though I know it can be draining.

I’m so sorry to hear about the No to hospice care but glad your mom is doing ok, thanks to all you’re doing for her. I have no experience in this matter having lost my mom at a young age, but I know there are various supportive opportunities for caregivers themselves and hope you can avail yourself of those sources to help keep you strong.

I’m really sorry. That ruling seems surprising given her advanced age. I do know how exhausting it is to be a caregiver. I hope you have other sources of support.

Morning. I have a sample of Paddock and saved it for today. It’s great. Has huge presence so I only used one spritz. A deep rich leather with hay. I think I smell the whole paddock-grass and hay and bit of leather and salt. I don’t smell any florals. If you like Galop or Cuir d’Ange you might like this. Suspect it’s hard to find. I really like it.

I had an opportunity to buy Paddock last summer through a woman who shops in France for US customers. The price made my eyes bulge!

I also had an opportunity last year in store. I almost got it because it was such a “fun” scent but that price tag held me back. Now though, all perfumes are getting crazy price tags, it doesn’t seem “that expensive” anymore!

If someone suggests I wear an Hermès the first thing I reach for will be vintage Parfum d’Hermès extract, which I am in fact wearing today.

Just disembarked this morning from our two-week transatlantic cruise, and it was so relaxing we didn’t want it to end. Weather wasn’t the greatest — a solid week of rain and fog (for some reason I never thought of fog on the open ocean), with some sun at last towards the end — but I would rather be on a ship than just about anywhere else, no matter the weather.

I brought 22 self-decanted fragrances so I wouldn’t have to repeat myself, but I accidentally did anyway because I brought two vials of the same thing (L’instant de Guerlain Pour Homme) and didn’t notice until I’d worn it twice.

Now a few days in London, a few days in Montréal, and it’s back to the grind. It was fun while it lasted.

I love cruises. The best cruise I’d been on was a 5 days cruise down the Nile. That was 26 years ago! Holy moly!
Did you try to bring different genres of perfumes or just scents that you’d want to wear?

Just a mad collection. Things I can wear in public without offending (can’t go wrong with Hermès Rocabar), a few oddities for when I might be in that kind of mood (Saturday is SL Chypre Rouge and I haven’t worn CSP Vanille Banane yet), three different carnations (one day I felt like Caron Coup de Fouet), everything. When I open the cabinet at home I like to have one of them speak to me, and I wanted to replicate that rather than being limited to a few things.

Basking and basking on a spring Friday in Hermes Eau d’Orange Verte. I bought a bottle at a wee perfumery finally after coveting it for a very long time. Thanks to the awesome NSTer who accompanied me, generously left me with so much fragrance, snd taught me so much! That deep blue-green bottle is a joy y tu o spray!

I wore Santal Massoia before my morning walk and errands today, but it’s almost completely faded now, so I spritzed on some Caleche Soie de Parfum.

I cannot believe the new Shalimar Millesime Rose is already sold out. I really hope it does get restocked. I was rather distracted yesterday with stuff to do with my job search and also sort of pushing back on blind buying something, and of course I now regret not jumping on it.

In other news, I seem to be copying more articles from The Wall Street Journal lately. Here’s an article with info on what to do since most people would have already filed their taxes. For me, I have to figure out the best way to determine cost basis for stocks I am selling in the next few years. In any case, here’s the article although there may be a pay wall:

For today’s cp I’m staying with Christine Nagel and her Merveilles creations, this time it’s the EdM Bleue, a favorite of mine in the summer. Sea notes, woody notes, and patchouli, all things I ❤️.

Got some nice freebies today.! The long-awaited free sample of JD Scatamalis Base edp, a blend of the 6 base notes of the Juste Filthy Noir Homme edp – patchouli, vetiver, cedarwood, civet, skatole, and musk. Meant to be worn as a base to add depth to the Juste (or another fragrance). I think a tiny spritz would also serve as a calming yoga scent. Also had a points reward + a coupon for BBW, so I got a full-size of the new Vera Bradley Peach Blossom & Nectar body cream and a travel size of the body spray. All nice treats and all free!

On the drive to the grocery store this morning it became apparent that every single redbud and every single tulip in my area was in full bloom along with many other shrubs and trees. My favorite fragrant viburnum shrub, that I wait all year for, opened up into full boom overnight in my garden yesterday; it was way too fast and way too early and I know it won’t last more than another day or so. More severe storms are due tonight with damaging winds, hail and heavy downpours. I doubt those fragile blossoms could withstand all that. We’re already under a flood warning from a nearby river and a tornado watch. Oy! The good news is that this is supposedly the last of this awful stretch of nasty weather. I hope🤞 and pray🙏.

Sending stay safe wishes to all.

Oh dear, too bad about ongoing rain and winds. I talked with my aunt in Ann Arbor yesterday and although she missed the tornado (thank goodness), she’s sad that the storm really battered their tulips. However, she said their trees and yard are unbelievably green right now due to all the rain, and that’s a good thing.

Again late posting, due to my PT and some other errands followed by a long long nap (my PT guy is kicking my butt with heavier and heavier weights and pulls!). I looked up fragrances by Christine Nagel and found another one of hers that I have, but don’t wear, Delices de Cartier, in the pretty bright red bottle. I confess, it’s one of a few examples of perfumes I truly did buy for the bottle, since my bedroom is red (Chinese red) and I thought it would look so pretty. I have not worn it in years–it’s very very old–and I’m finding it rather nice, though it goes on very sweet. It’s got some warmth and depth. I should give it more wears, since it still smells fine.

Oh, I’m so glad, isn’t it wonderful? I’m now into the second season, which has only four episodes, but they’re very long and each one is quite well-developed. The settings and architecture are truly spectacular, and as for the two lead actors, playing Ricciardi and Maione, they are just so perfect for their parts.

Guy playing Ricciardi is perfect. Guy playing Maione was a surprise, he looks older than I expected (and no disrespect to the actor but I think he looks older than his age) but I adjusted quickly…it’s all very well done.

Today started off sunny, but by 10:30 this morning it was snowing and blowing like early March. Had a couple more rounds of snow after that. But by 4pm the sun was back out. There are a few patches of snow here and there. The white blanket that was on the grass and building roofs is gone. Gonna get COLD tonight!

SOTD = Hermes Jour d’Hermes Absolu EdP. My other Hermes scents are for much warmer weather than what rolled in today. Wearing Korres Jasmine body butter in the usual spots.

I definitely prefer the Absolu. It has more presence than its parent does. There was something about the OG that didn’t really play nice with my personal chemistry.

I looked at the notes listed on Fragrantica, and it mentioned ‘watery notes’. Aquatics usually don’t sit very well with me.

Some of the modern green notes are also To Be Avoided.

    • Gail says:
      17 April 2026 at 11:16 pm

We ran out of nested comments, but thank you! That makes perfect sense about aquatics. They can be no bueno on me too. I noticed a dirty vase water note amplified on me in one of the un Jardin scents. The dry down was so nice but I just couldn’t wear it.

I am currently working with a girl who keeps asking ” what is your ETA?” When what she really means is “what is your location?” When using the radio.

I have just about given up gardening entirely, but I plant petunias in the urns on my porch today, and ripped most of the Autumn Clematis out of the oakleaf hydrangea it is trying to choke out of existence. Gosh that stuff is invasive, I will never get rid of it all.

Better late than never! I was very fortunate to swap for a large bottle of Vanille Galante, probably my favorite Hermessence, in the last swap meet so that’s my sotd.

I had a pretty good week with Hermes perfumes. I wore Eau de Mandarine Ambree, 24 Faubourg, and Galop, though I did decide to put my Galop decant in the swap pile. It’s nice, it just doesn’t really do anything for me and reminds me quite a bit of Narciso Rodriguez for Her.

Late posting because we’re hosting in-laws this weekend. We’re having a great time catching up and looking forward to another day together tomorrow, capped off by dinner at one of our favorite nice restaurants.

You should have seen the looks on their faces when I showed them the Perfume Fort. “How do you wear all of this?” “How do you choose what to wear in the morning?” “Doesn’t it go bad?” “Do you have Joy, that’s what my mom wore?” “Why yes, I do.” Magical sniffing moment ensued. And that’s vintage Joy for you💕

I’ve been wearing a lot of Calèche this week but I admit to getting side tracked by Musc Ravageur. With so much talk of the Shalimar flanker, I’ve been drawn to this Shalimar adjacent beauty.
